May Half-term on the Yorkshire Coast

With longer days, milder weather, and the coast coming to life, May half-term is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled family getaway to the stunning Yorkshire coast. It’s the ideal time to reconnect with loved ones, soak up the fresh sea air, and embrace the freedom of the great outdoors — all while staying in one of our luxurious, handpicked holiday cottages.

From adventure-packed beach days to laid-back seaside lunches, the Yorkshire coast has something for all ages during this exciting time of year.

Sun, Sea, and Sandcastles

As spring turns to summer, the beaches come alive with energy. Spend your days building sandcastles, paddling in the sea, or exploring rock pools teeming with marine life. Filey, Bridlington, Scarborough, and Hunmanby Gap all offer family-friendly beaches with golden sands and safe, shallow waters — perfect for children to enjoy.

Many beaches also have seasonal RNLI lifeguard cover during the half-term week, giving you peace of mind while your little ones play.

Coastal Attractions in Full Swing

May half-term is when many of the area’s top attractions reopen for the summer season. Hop aboard a vintage steam train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, visit the friendly animals at Playdale Farm Park, or take a boat trip from Bridlington harbour. Explore the stunning cliffs and seabird colonies at Bempton Cliffs RSPB Reserve, or try your hand at mini golf and traditional amusements along Scarborough’s seafront.

For older children and teens, there are plenty of outdoor adventures to enjoy, from surfing lessons and paddleboarding to hiking and biking trails with spectacular coastal views.

Eat, Explore, and Enjoy

With beach cafés, ice cream parlours, and seaside pubs fully open for the season, you’ll find no shortage of delicious options to fuel your days. Enjoy locally caught seafood, wood-fired pizzas by the beach, or a classic portion of fish and chips overlooking the sea.

Don’t miss the local markets and food festivals often held over the half-term week, where you can sample artisan bakes, Yorkshire cheeses, and seasonal produce to enjoy back at your cottage.

There are always lots of things to see and do on the Yorkshire Coast – check out our exciting to do page here:

Your Home from Home by the Sea

After a day of exploring, return to the comfort of your coastal cottage. Whether you’re staying in a spacious family home, a cosy apartment by the sea, or a dog-friendly retreat, every property is designed with relaxation in mind. Think private gardens for outdoor playhot tubs for evening relaxation, and open-plan living spaces perfect for family meals and games nights.

Many of our cottages are located within walking distance of beaches or coastal paths, and several include extras like buckets and spades, picnic gear, and even board games and books to keep everyone entertained.
