Flamborough Lighthouse

Perched on the edge of Flamborough Head, Flamborough Lighthouse has watched over the Yorkshire coast for more than two centuries. Built in 1806 to replace an earlier, unlit tower from 1669, its bright white walls and powerful beam have long guided sailors through the dangers of the North Sea. Designed by Samuel Wyatt and now operated by Trinity House, the 26-metre-tall lighthouse remains both a working beacon and a cherished landmark. Standing against the wind and waves, it continues to embody the spirit of maritime safety and coastal heritage that defines Flamborough Head.

Flamborough Lighthouse stands proudly on the edge of Flamborough Head in East Yorkshire, guiding ships along the rugged North Sea coast. The current lighthouse, built in 1806 and still operational today, replaced an earlier chalk tower from 1669 that never had a working light. Designed by architect Samuel Wyatt, the lighthouse rises 26 metres high and emits a powerful beam that can be seen for over 20 miles, helping to prevent shipwrecks along this treacherous stretch of coastline. Now automated and managed by Trinity House, it remains an important maritime landmark as well as a popular visitor attraction. With its gleaming white tower and panoramic views over the cliffs and sea, Flamborough Lighthouse stands as both a historic monument and a symbol of safety for sailors navigating the Yorkshire coast.

The Flamborough Lighthouse Café sits just a short walk from the lighthouse itself, offering visitors a warm and welcoming spot to relax while taking in the stunning coastal views. Popular with walkers, birdwatchers, and families, the café serves a range of homemade cakes, light lunches, and hot drinks — perfect after exploring the windswept cliffs or watching the seabirds along the headland. With outdoor seating overlooking the sea, it’s an ideal place to pause and enjoy the fresh ocean air, the cry of gulls, and the distant flash of the lighthouse beam. Friendly and informal, the café captures the charm of Flamborough Head, combining comfort, scenery, and local flavour in one delightful stop.
